The government has introduced a statutory register of brownfield land suitable for housing in England and plans to legislate that local authorities will be able to give automatic permission in principle on brownfield sites identified on those registers, subject to a limited number of technical details. The Government hope this will help achieve the target of getting 90% of local development orders in place on suitable brownfield sites by 2020.
This in turn will create a 'zonal' system which will reduce unnecessary delay and uncertainty for brownfield development. The government will be able to directly intervene in the planning process to ensure work commences on previously developed land.
